The pipes and wires hidden behind the walls in our homes make it possible to enjoy clean water and power our devices. Just beyond our front doors, we’re close to public roads that take us to work. In some communities, city trash pickup happens while we watch grandkids play flag football in community parks.
None of this infrastructure appears by magic. It requires planning and investing that perhaps takes years, depending on the project. Every city’s water and sewer system requires separate pipes to deliver clean water and remove waste for treatment. Every county’s road and bridge department plans months in advance to pave roads connecting new developments and to purchase enough salt to make winter roads safer.
