After facing strong criticism from local politicians and a rejection from a longtime ally, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff on Friday recanted his recent call for the National Guard to help police San Francisco.

“Having listened closely to my fellow San Franciscans and our local officials, and after the largest and safest Dreamforce in our history, I do not believe the National Guard is needed to address safety in San Francisco,” Benioff wrote on the social-media platform X , referring to this week’s giant Salesforce conference.

“My earlier comment came from an abundance of caution around the event, and I sincerely apologize for the concern it caused,” said Benioff, thanking Mayor Daniel Lurie and the San Francisco Police Department.
