At least four police officers were injured on Friday while intervening in a demonstration by protesters near the US Embassy in Bogotá, the city's mayor reported.

"A group of criminals, some of them wearing hoods, in a premeditated and planned manner, evidently organized themselves to attack the police in the vicinity of the U.S. Embassy with explosive devices, incendiary devices, and arrows with bows," said Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán in a video statement.

The demonstration was called by the People's Congress, a national social movement founded in 2010.

The movement has been holding various protests since Tuesday with broad demands that include making improvements to infrastructure, urban planning, security and access to land.

The People's Congress stated on X that riot police attacked the protest, which they described as "belligerently peaceful".

It said the group rejected Israel's military actions in the Gaza Strip and the US' military deployment in Caribbean waters.
