Popular cars could disappear from UK roads within years as the electric vehicle revolution looms. Recent data from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) shows that 470,000 driving tests were taken in automatic cars last year across England, Scotland and Wales.

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) reports that in 2012/13, just 6.1 per cent of all driving tests were taken in automatics. By 2023/24, that figure had climbed to 23.4 per cent, reaching 26 per cent in 2024/25. That translates to more than 470,000 automatic car driving tests last year.

Emma Bush, managing director of AA Driving School, said: "We have been tracking the growing trend for taking the test in an automatic for some time now.
