Two Fort Erie residents face hefty fines for tampering with their residential water meter, the town says.

A news release from the town on Friday said 16 administrative monetary penalty system charges have been laid, following an investigation in the Dominion Road area between Aug. 16 and Sept. 27.

“The town’s bylaw prohibits anyone from interfering with, obstructing, concealing, or preventing access to any municipal or private fire hydrant, valve, water meter, or related equipment,” says the news release.

Offenders face a minimum fine of $400 per count.

In this case, the parties face about $6,400 in fines, the town’s news release said.
