MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Immigration advocates in Shelby County say individuals with valid U.S. government-issued IDs are being stopped, questioned, and even detained under what they describe as discriminatory practices by federal agents.
Despite presenting valid documentation, some individuals say they are being asked for additional proof of identity, such as passports — a move attorneys and watchdog groups argue amounts to racial profiling.
“When people are being pulled over, not only are they being asked for their driver’s licenses, but also a lot of times being asked for other kinds of documentation like passports, even if someone is presenting a valid driver’s license,” said Casey Bryant, an immigration attorney with Advocates for Immigrant Rights.
