MEMPHIS, Tenn. — In one order, federal judge Mark Norris is defending his recusal in the Tyré Nichols case and denying a motion to recuse himself in a totally separate case.
On Friday, Norris issued an order in the ongoing legal battle between the ACLU and the City of Memphis. The case centers on the Memphis Police Department's compliance with the Modified Kendrick Consent Decree, which prohibits MPD from gathering intelligence or conducting investigations using methods that violate the subject's First Amendment rights.
Earlier this month, an order for Norris's recusal from the case was issued. The order cited events that led to Norris's recusal in the sentencing for three former Memphis Police officers who were sentenced on federal charges in the death of Tyre Nichols.
