The resources needed in order to staff certain ERs in rural Newfoundland and Labrador on a 24 hour basis will require “a lot of conversation” according to Registered Nurses Union President Yvette Coffey.

While on the election trail, the newly-elected PC government promised to hire more ER doctors, registered nurses and nurse practitioners to help staff rural ERs 24/7.

Coffey says that’s going to be tough and it will require financial incentives.

“We’ve been in places like Botwood, Buchans and that, and if we’re going to recruit people to these rural areas and ensure that we do have 24/7 coverage, we’re going to have to staff-up, and we’re going to have to pay people. There’s going to have to be incentives.”
