Senior linebacker Sam Howard was listed as out on Tulane’s official injury report two hours before kickoff against Army, leaving the Green Wave without both of its original starters at a position with mounting injuries.

Coach Jon Sumrall said Howard hurt his leg in the fourth quarter last Thursday against East Carolina but played through the injury. No one realized its severity until the Green Wave began practicing for the Black Knights.

“Even the next morning we thought it was a little ankle tweak,” Sumrall said. “It was a little more significant than we thought. It’s a not-weight bearing bone is his lower leg, his fibula, a hairline fracture type deal.”

Howard, Tulane’s leading returning tackler from 2024, is fourth on the team with 31 stops through six games. He joins Dickson Agu,
