The territory's top prosecutor has revealed the legal costs behind running a complex sexual assault case in an effort to illustrate financial pressures on her office.

As public debate on government funding continues , defence lawyers have also expressed criticisms about how they believe prosecuting funds are currently being put to use.

In its latest annual report, the ACT Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions shared the theoretical pricetag behind the long-running matter of Abhishek Timalsina.

"A recent independent cost assessment showed that the matter would have cost the government, on a conservative estimate, in the vicinity of $300,000 - $340,000," Director of Public Prosecutions Victoria Engel SC wrote.
