CHARLESTON — A man found not guilty by reason of insanity in a 2021 homicide case will receive a $125,000 settlement from the sheriff’s office.

William A. Taylor, 26, repeatedly bashed his head in his cell while in a psychotic episode in late-June 2021 and remains paralyzed years later. Taylor will never regain the function of his limbs and will require care for the rest of his life, according to a recent report from the state.

The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office settled a June 2023 lawsuit filed by Taylor’s court-appointed conservator on Oct. 7. The lawsuit accused jail staff of failing to provide heightened care to the man with schizophrenia and preventing the 2021 self-harm incident.
