Just before 9:20 a.m., a fire started from an electric door motor within one of the loading areas of the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) Detention Facility in Bisbee, according to the department.
The door motor had an electrical malfunction and “caused a significant amount of toxic smoke to fill the loading area and hallway toward the kitchen,” according to CCSO. The facility was placed on lockdown for safety checks of inmates and staff.
There were two inmates, three kitchen workers, and seven detention officers injured or suffering from smoke inhalation. They are being assessed for any serious repercussions.
