LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) - As the government shutdown continues, people across the country are continuing to feel the effects.

Now, as winter approaches, the best time to plant your crop is dwindling; local farmers who depend on state and federal resources are among those affected, especially tree farmers.

Patrick Johnson works for the Soil Water Conservation District for Angelina County, providing local farmers with various resources, ranging from financial assistance to tree planting to erosion control.

Since the shutdown, his office hasn’t been running.

As a rancher himself, he says that cattle farmers aren’t at a big risk right now following the shutdown, but independent East Texas tree farmers may be put in a tough situation.
