CANFIELD, Ohio (WTRF) — Oct. 18 is National Move Over Day, a reminder that flashing lights on the roadside mean someone’s life is on the line — a message that carries deep meaning this year in Ohio.
Just days ago, Trooper Nicholas P. Cayton, 40, of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, was killed while assisting a disabled semi on State Route 11 in Mahoning County.
Cayton was seated in his marked cruiser with his emergency lights activated when a northbound truck struck his vehicle from behind, pushing it into the semi and killing him.
His death serves as a heartbreaking reminder of why move over laws exist — to protect those working along busy roads, from law enforcement and first responders to tow truck operators and construction crews.
