PEORIA ( 25News Now ) - Friday, the Greater Peoria Habitat for Humanity held a wall raising ceremony for the first of six houses they plan to build in the South Side neighborhood.

The affordable single-family homes will go to local families who will purchase the homes with a 20-year, zero-percent interest mortgage.

The local family who will live in the first home has already been chosen. A teacher, her two children, and her mother will live in the house together.

Habitat for Humanity has finished houses in the Near North Valley, the East Bluff, and other areas. According to city leaders, this is their first time building on the South Side.

The West Adrian G Hinton Ave. site was once home to McKinley School, which was demolished in March 2023 , with American Rescue Plan funds.
