The Heritage Classic will make its return next year.
During the “Saturday Headlines” segment on Hockey Night in Canada, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that the outdoor tradition will continue next season and Winnipeg is at the top of the list for potential host cities.
The Heritage Classic hasn’t happened since 2023, with only seven instances of the event happening ever.
The inaugural Heritage Classic was played in Edmonton in 2003 and marked the first outdoor regular-season NHL game ever played. It became the inspiration for the Winter Classic and Stadium Series outdoor games that followed.
In the last rendition, in Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium, the Oilers beat the Flames 5-2.
The outdoor game last came to Winnipeg in 2016 when the Oilers beat the Jets 3-0.
