A man has died following an assault in East Gwillimbury late Friday night. York Regional Police responded to a report of an assault in progress at 11:25 p.m. at the intersection of Queensville Sideroad and Yonge Street, located north of Newmarket. Upon arrival, officers found the victim suffering from critical injuries. He was quickly transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Investigators confirmed that one suspect is in custody. They believe the incident was isolated and are not seeking any additional suspects. The Homicide Unit of York Regional Police has taken over the investigation. Duty Inspector Rich Gaudet addressed the media early Saturday morning, stating, "The community can expect a larger police presence in this area while we canvass for witnesses, we collect video, and we collect evidence at the scene." Gaudet also encouraged anyone with information about the incident to reach out to York Regional Police or to contact Crime Stoppers anonymously. As the investigation continues, police have not yet indicated whether any charges will be filed in connection with the assault.
