BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- The Birmingham Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting that left a 73-year-old man dead.
According to the BPD, the incident occurred on Friday, Oct. 17. At around 10:01 a.m., North Precinct officers responded to a report of a person shot in the 3500 block of 27th Avenue North. Upon arrival, officers found the victim lying unresponsive, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The victim was identified as Alfred Stephens, of Bessemer.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel responded and transported Stephens to UAB Hospital, where he died from his injuries on Saturday, Oct. 18.
The preliminary investigation indicated that the shooting occurred after a verbal altercation, according to the BPD. The suspect shot the victim and fled the scene.
