When Athlone Town’s Chloe Singleton walked into Tolka Park on that August afternoon last year ahead of a big top-of-the-table clash, the Mater hospital was the last place she expected to find herself.

In an instant, the midfielder’s targets of league and FAI Cup success last season were soon replaced by the very real possibility that her career might be over at the age of just 23.
