KINGSTON, N.Y. — “The Plague” won best narrative and “Cutting Through Rocks” won best documentary at the Woodstock Film Festival Maverick Awards ceremony at the Assembly in Uptown on a Saturday night that was filled with calls for activism from honorees and presenters alike.
Among the honorees at the festival, now in its 26th year, was documentary filmmaker Laura Poitras, who received the Freedom of Expression Award. Poitras is an Oscar and Pulitzer Prize–winning filmmaker and journalist.
Poitras said that she’s been lucky to be able to make films about people who put their lives on the line and take risks and who have changed the world. “As filmmakers, we need to … come together.
