Before you even set foot inside a charity shop , you can be certain there'll be a collection of DVDs, 1,000-piece jigsaws and second-hand clothing on display. However, occasionally, you come across a piece that's worth a lot more than you might expect .

For one woman, that piece was a pair of earrings up for sale for $6.99 (£5.24) and hanging on a rack among a variety of costume jewellery. After taking a liking to them, she decided to buy and polish them up before having them valued, suspecting they might be worth considerably more than their bargain price.

On Reddit, she posted detailed photographs of the earrings along with a receipt showing their assessed worth - revealing it to be $4,682 (£3,445).
