One of the two men suspected of spying for the Chinese government was stopped at Heathrow airport with a suitcase of cash, it has been reported.
Christopher Berry, 33, an academic from Witney, Oxfordshire, was intercepted carrying £4,000 at the airport in February 2023, six weeks before he was formally arrested.
According to The Sunday Times , the money was given to him by his alleged Chinese agent, but the currency or whether it was kept by the police is unclear.
The cases against Berry and Chris Cash, also accused of spying for China, collapsed last month.
