The N.C. State Fair has been celebrating the state’s farms and economy for more than 150 years. For the past 20 of them, Military Appreciation Day has been a part of the festivities, featuring a parade, special music and a tribute program.

This year, though, there’s a return of a free admission perk. On Wednesday, Oct. 22, military personnel with proof of identification, plus one guest, will get free entry into the fair. There’s also a discounted admission of $8 for members of the military and a guest every other day of the fair. It takes place Oct. 16-26 at the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh, with rides, food, entertainment and livestock exhibits.
