When Megan Wassink drove her two-year-old daughter to hospital, she never expected to be told her little girl was lucky to be alive.
Little Hayley had been unwell for weeks, and it wasn’t until Ms Wassink drove 3.5 hours to Princess Margaret Hospital from their home in Katanning that they found out why.
The toddler had type 1 diabetes, and without a diagnosis it had sent her into multi-organ failure.
“By the time I got there, she was unconscious,” Ms Wassink said.
“They took her straight into ICU (intensive care unit). We were so lucky that we saw them when we did.”
Hayley was placed in an induced coma while specialists worked round the clock to save her.
After the immediate danger of losing her was over, the toddler was under careful watch in hospital for two weeks as she recovered.
