The community is asking why Akron police officer Davon Fields was not indicted in the shooting death of Jazmir Tucker. I knew that this decision would come down because of the time that it took. My question would be, what did the grand jury see or hear that we cannot see or know?

From the bodycam footage, it was clear that Jazmir was shot in the back. We never saw a gun in his hand. We saw the delay in giving Jazmir medical attention.

There have been some improvements in the Akron Police Department policies but not enough. We cannot afford to lose our Black men through gun violence, whether by our own community members or the Akron Police Department.

I have asked the question numerous times on the Akron City Council floor as to why there is not more deescalation.
