The Aston Villa players immediately surrounded the referee at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after the ball hit the official.

A Spurs free-kick late in the second half from Pedro Porro hit Simon Hooper, who was standing about 10 yards to the side of him.

The ball cannoned off the referee and into the path of Mohammed Kudus .

The Villa players and everyone in the stadium were expecting Hooper to blow the whistle.

However, the game continued with Kudus firing the ball across goal with Mathys Tel having the chance to score.

Tel fluffed his chance and the Villa players, led by captain John McGinn, immediately ran to the referee questioning why the match was not immediately stopped.

It remains to be seen what would have happened if the ball had hit the back of the net.
