Four people were killed and another was injured in an accident on the New Jersey Turnpike early Sunday, NBC10 has reported .

The crash occurred at about 1 a.m. on the southbound side, just past Exit 1 in Carneys Point.

Officials told NBC 10 that the accident involved two vehicles and one injured person was taken to an unnamed hospital.

The New Jersey State Police are handling the investigation and did not immediately respond to a request for information from NJ Advance Media.

Traffic was only getting by on the highway’s shoulder until after 8 a.m. The incident has now been cleared, according to a New Jersey Department of Transportation website.
