Pulitzer Prize finalist and New York Times’ bestselling author Nathaniel Philbrick is coming to Hampton Roads.

The acclaimed historian is scheduled to lecture Tuesday at The Slover library in downtown Norfolk as the inaugural speaker for the Sail250 Virginia Speaker Series, commemorating the U.S. semiquincentennial.

Philbrick’s book “In the Heart of the Sea” — about the true story of the sunk whaling ship that inspired Herman Melville’s “Moby-Dick” — won the 2000 National Book Award for Nonfiction. Ron Howard later directed a movie based on Philbrick’s book.

His other New York Times’ bestselling books include “The Last Stand” in 2010, “Bunker Hill: A City, a Siege, a Revolution” in 2013 and his latest work published in 2021, “Travels with George: In Search of Washington and His Legacy
