The San Jose Sharks planned a fun night to celebrate Hispanic Heritage with their annual “Los Tiburones Night.” But things took an unexpected turn when a message on the SAP Center scoreboard caused controversy instead.

During the first period of the Sharks’ matchup against the Pittsburgh Penguins, a message flashed across the big screen that read, “SJ SHARKS FANS LOVE ICE !! GET ‘EM BOYZ!”

Fans inside the arena immediately took notice. What seemed like a playful hockey pun quickly turned into outrage, given the reference to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on a night meant to celebrate the Hispanic community.
