Started by a small group of competitors three decades ago, the Attunga Downunder Rodeo has long been a premier event on the region's sporting and social calendar.

The latest instalment of the annual happening has been staged at the Attunga Recreation Ground.

Speaking after the junior events and ahead of the main action in the evening, rodeo president Adam Maher said it was "shaping as a really good night".

"The weather's great," he said. "And once the sun goes down, and it cools down a bit, I think it will really heat up this evening."

Maher hoped to see a crowd of up to 1500.

"If you look out on the hill, there's plenty of capacity. And I think that's what probably makes this rodeo a good night ... it's really open to the families here."
