SODUS, N.Y. (WROC) — According to New York State Police, skeletal remains believed to be human were found in Sodus.

Troopers say that a property owner reportedly called 911 after locating the remains in a wooded area, prompting the response of the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Identification Unit to Champlin Road.

At the scene, additional bones were found during excavation over the course of an investigation of the area.

NYSP confirmed that a preliminary investigation was done by a forensic anthropologist who determined the skeletal remains are believed to be human. The Medical Examiner's Office will now proceed to conduct further analysis and identify the remains.

The investigation into this matter remains ongoing.
