A car crashed into a tree and caught fire Friday night in East Brookfield, Massachusetts, trapping the driver inside.

The East Brookfield Fire Department responded around 9:33 p.m. to the area of 184 West Sturbridge Road and found the driver was unconscious.

Some crews were able to knock down the flames in the engine compartment with dry chem extinguishers, while others worked to free the trapped driver. After about 45 minutes, the driver was freed and flown by medical helicopter to UMass Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. They are expected to survive.

The fire department credited teamwork and training for turning what could have been a very tragic situation into a positive outcome.
