As Chennai began its Diwali celebrations, heavy rains lashed several parts of the city and suburbs, including Velachery, Medavakkam, Pallikaranai, and ECR Neelankarai, on Monday, leading to waterlogging in many areas.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is very likely at isolated places across several districts. It also predicted continued rainfall across coastal Tamil Nadu through October 22.
