TEL AVIV — (TNS) The Israeli military on Sunday said it is to begin the "renewed enforcement of the ceasefire" in Gaza after striking targets in the territory in response to attacks on its troops by the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the decision was taken "in accordance with the directive of the political echelon, and following a series of significant strikes in response to Hamas' violation."

"The IDF will continue to uphold the ceasefire agreement and will respond firmly to any violation of it," the military said.

The renewed violence has threatened to derail the U.S.-backed peace plan between Israel and Hamas, which secured the release of the remaining Israeli hostages and hundreds of Palestinian prisoners earlier this week.
