Police Association boss Wayne Gatt has slammed “rubbish” claims of left-wing protest organisers as Victoria Police revealed the extent of the violence officers suffered.
Chaos erupted on the streets of Melbourne on Sunday as so-called anti-racism counter protesters attempted to confront March for Australia rally attendees.
Victoria Police had erected a barricade on Bourke Street to keep attendees at a rally organised by the far-left Campaign Against Racism and Fascism’s protest at the State Library away from the anti-immigration demonstrators gathering on the steps of Parliament house.
But the scene soon turned violent with protesters hurling rocks, glass bottles and other projectiles at police.
The violent scenes sparked outrage from Victoria Police and the state’s political leaders.
