UN Special Rapporteur Pedro Arrojo Agudo urged global action on the democratization of water governance and the protection of human rights concerning access to water sources on Friday.
According to the report submitted to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation, noted that the global water crisis is a global governance challenge that demands a reorientation of priorities, participatory and sustainable management approaches.
Arrojo Agudo cited the Water Justice Manifesto from the 2023 UN Water Conference to emphasize that the idea of “water justice” means that water and aquatic ecosystems should be shared and common resources under a human-rights based approach rather than meant to profit
