Green Day ’s American Idiot is the UK’s biggest rock and metal album of the 21st century, according to the Official Charts .

Announced on this year’s National Album Day (October 18), it’s been revealed that Billie Joe Armstrong and co.’s classic seventh record beat out the likes of Linkin Park, Foo Fighters, My Chemical Romance, Muse and Red Hot Chili Peppers to take the title of number one, having sold 2.6 million units in the UK since its release in 2004.
