A crime that initially baffled both the police and residents of Mauaima in Prayagraj has taken a disturbing turn with the arrest of a woman accused of brutally attacking her brother-in-law and mutilating his private parts. The shocking act, it has now emerged, was driven by revenge and emotional turmoil within the family.

The incident came to light when 20-year-old Umesh, son of Ram Asare from Malkhanpur village in Mauaima, was found bleeding profusely in his room on the night of 16 October. His family members, awakened by his screams, rushed to find him writhing in pain, with severe stab wounds and his private parts severed.
