INDIANAPOLIS — An east side fire sent one woman to the hospital after she inhaled toxic smoke.

According to the Indianapolis Fire Department, firefighters arrived at Braeburn Village Apartments — located near E. 21st Street and Franklin Way — just after midnight on Monday and spotted smoke coming from a third-story apartment.

Firefighters made their way into the apartment and found heavy smoke waiting inside, along with a fire burning in the back corner of the room.

A 50-year-old woman was rescued from the apartment and transported to a hospital in serious condition.

According to IFD, the fire originated from an unattended candle placed in a pan, which was sitting on a chair. Investigators believe the woman was awoken by a smoke alarm and that she moved the pan off the chair before suc
