Ministers are considering cheaper on-street EV charging or boosting the electric car grant in a bid to soften the blow of higher taxes on electric vehicle drivers in the Budget next month, The i Paper understands.

It comes as Rachel Reeves is looking at increasing taxes on EVs in the Budget as the Treasury aims to ensure all drivers pay their fair share.

The Chancellor is understood to be drawing up a range of options, including levies on the weight of cars, as well as a pay-per-mile scheme to help the Exchequer recoup money that will be lost in fuel duty, as more people turn away from petrol and diesel vehicles in the future. New Feature
