MESA, Ariz. — A teenager is in custody after taking an SUV on a "joyride" through the East Valley on Monday, the Gilbert Police Department said.

Around 1:48 a.m., the Mesa Police Department’s air unit saw a black Chevrolet Tahoe traveling at high speeds near Higley and Elliot roads in Gilbert.

Police said the Tahoe was going more than 80 mph on residential streets. The air unit provided real-time updates as Gilbert units tried traffic stops on the vehicle. According to officials, the driver failed to stop and made evasive maneuvers to evade officers.

The driver of the Tahoe traveled into Mesa, running a red light at a high rate of speed before disappearing from view.
