TUCSON, Arizona — University of Arizona President Suresh Garimella shared insights on the university's involvement with the U.S. Department of Education's Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education proposal.

The university was one of nine selected to provide feedback on the proposal, which has sparked significant discussion both locally and nationally. Garimella emphasized the importance of engaging in dialogue rather than simply providing a written response.

"A number of the proposed federal recommendations deserve thoughtful consideration," Garimella said. He noted that many ideas from the proposal are already implemented at the university.

However, Garimella stressed the importance of preserving academic freedom, merit-based research funding, and institutional independence.
