HOUSTON – A 21-year-old driver appeared in court Monday morning after being accused of killing two people while driving under the influence.

Ariel Perry Stewart has been charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle.

The crash happened in the early morning hours of Oct. 17.

While driving eastbound on the Katy Freeway, a gray Tesla Model Y, driven by Stewart, struck a Nissan Sentra. The collision caused the Sentra to lose control, spin out, and strike a barrier. The Sentra burst into flames.

The passenger in the Tesla was also hospitalized following the crash, but she is expected to survive.
