The purge has begun.

Early this morning (Monday, Oct. 20), all four rainbow crosswalks at the intersection of Westheimer and Taft in the heart of Houston’s Montrose gayborhood were removed, despite attempts by protesters — who showed up as early as 2:30 a.m. — to protect them, according to Fox26.

The rainbow crosswalks there were first installed in 2017, according to news reports.

Fox26 reports that when construction crews arrived at the intersection to begin covering up the rainbow crosswalks, they were met by numerous protesters who had already congregated to try and protect the painted crosswalks.

The Houston television station says that Houston police officers arrived and protesters were moved out of the crosswalk and onto the sidewalks, and barricades were erected to keep them out
