Chatham-Kent police officers testified they did all they could to assist Thomas Humphrey during what they called a chaotic scene, during a coroner’s inquest into the man’s death.

Humphrey, 35, of Delaware Nation at Moraviantown heritage, died in the Chatham hospital on Aug. 6, 2019, following an interaction with officers. An inquest into his death is mandatory under the Coroners Act.

Friday was the third day for the inquest, which is being held virtually. Six days in total are expected, with 10 witnesses.

Const. Trevor Biskey, one of the responding officers, said Humphrey was flailing around, sometimes kicking and trying to throw punches.

“We have to take control as swiftly and safely as possible,” Biskey said.
