(KRON) -- Ex-NFL All-Pro running back Doug Martin died Saturday after being detained by Oakland police officers for allegedly breaking into a residence, sources told Nexstar's KRON4 in San Francisco.

Martin, an Oakland native, gained fame as an offensive weapon with a compact but powerful running style that earned him the nickname "muscle hamster" during his playing days with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers a decade ago. He ended his career playing the 2018 season in Oakland with the Raiders after seven years in the NFL. Before his death, officers responded to a home on Ettrick Street at 4:15 a.m. Saturday after a report of a residential break-in. At the same time, officers were told that the suspect of the break-in was “experiencing a medical emergency,” the Oakland Police Department said.
