CARBONDALE, Ill. — A tense scene in Carbondale ended peacefully Monday afternoon after a man barricaded himself inside an abandoned building. Officials say this is thanks to teamwork between police and community organizations.

Carbondale Police responded earlier in the day after reports of a potentially armed man inside a vacant structure. Officers quickly secured the area and began communicating with the man, who refused to come out. The standoff lasted several hours before the individual surrendered without incident. No one was hurt.

Police Chief Anthony Copeland said the outcome reflected the department’s ongoing emphasis on communication and collaboration.
