LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- Fire officials are investigating the cause of a fire that occurred today in Lafayette.

Today, Lafayette firefighters were called to a report of smoke in the area on West Simcoe Street and Evangeline Street around noon.

When firefighters arrived on scene, smoke was coming from a small apartment attached to the dwelling. Emergency crews entered the home and discovered a small fire in the attic above an entrance door that was quickly extinguished.

Officials said the dwelling and attached apartment unit have been vacant for several years. The dwellings did not have any utility services. Owners of the vacant home indicated recent issues with homeless individuals accessing the premise.
