HARTFORD, Conn. —
The man who pleaded guilty to killing a construction worker with his car last year was sentenced Monday to 18 years, serving seven of those in prison and five on probation post release.
Twenty-five-year-old Tommy Nguyen was accused of speeding through a work zone and hitting and killing Jose Diaz-Nieves, a construction worker with Paramount Construction LLC, in June of 2024 on West Boulevard in Hartford.
Nguyen was driving an unregistered and unlicensed car when Diaz-Nieves’ was killed, police said.
During his first appearance, supporters of Nguyen argued what happened was the result of a seizure. Nguyen confirmed this in a letter at his sentencing, read by his attorney Michael Chambers Jr.
