TAMPA — Authorities in California released more details about the death of Doug Martin, the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back who died this weekend .
Oakland police said Martin, 36, was involved in a break-in at a residence in the city. Officers who responded to the scene Saturday morning detained him, and the department said a "brief struggle occurred."
"After being taken into custody, Martin became unresponsive," police said in a news release.
Paramedics responded to the scene and took Martin to a hospital, where he later died.
The police department said it has been in contact with Martin’s family. The family has requested privacy.
The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave.
Police said the investigation is still ongoing.
